Happy Nutella Day! Yup, that’s right. It’s World Nutella Day. In honor of this wonderful day, I decided to whip up one of the Nutella recipes I have pinned. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seeing recipes for mug cakes all over the place. I’ve never tried them…until now!
If you haven’t seen a mug cake yet, the idea is genius. You basically make a little mini cake in a mug and “bake” it in the microwave. I was very skeptical at first. Baking with the microwave? How good could that be?
Well, it’s quite good!
I learned a few things this first time around though. First, use the largest mugs you have. I used what I thought was a large mug, but apparently it wasn’t big enough because some of the cake spilled over the top. Second, remember that these cakes fill those super large mugs to the brim. I could barely even eat half of mine!
I also wasn’t sure how long to cook it. The original post suggests anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3 minutes depending on your microwave. I had no idea how to tell if my cake was done after 1 1/2 or if I should keep it in there longer. There isn’t exactly time to stick a toothpick in it like you can while baking in the oven. I just took a guess and went with a time right in the middle, 2 minutes and 15 seconds. The top was a tad drier than the bottom so I probably wouldn’t put them in as long next time.
